The Structure of the Training Process

The Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis intends to provide a high level of knowledge and skill and to enable a process of professional ever-becoming for associates interested in psychoanalytic training and participation in the work of the institute. We endeavor to provide a training which is broad and open-minded, which would encourage trainees to be creative, innovative and critically minded, while adhering to standards of quality.

Activity and study in the institute take place through two complementary paths. The first is the Study Forum which encompasses all institute members, including associates in training. This group, also devoted to the development of the institute’s foundations, meets once every month for several hours. Its meetings include theoretical and clinical study as well as organizational discussions. During study sections, associates present their work before the forum and open fundamental psychoanalytic issues up for debate; the organizational sections include discussing group issues and making principal decisions about the Institute’s activities. The second path of activity is that of the Training Groups. These groups follow a set curriculum which combines theoretical enrichment with learning from clinical experience, while allowing associates much freedom.

  • The Institute’s psychoanalytic training curriculum includes:
Personal Analysis – each admitted associate must undergo personal psychoanalysis which includes, at least for part of its course, four weekly sessions. An associate who underwent psychoanalysis and concluded it no less than eight years ago is not obligated to further experiences in analysis. Nevertheless, it is advised, even in these cases, to resume analysis for a certain period while conducting one’s own analyses.
  • Supervision – from the second year on, at least two detailed supervisions are required, each accompanying a separate analysis, lasting a minimum of two years. At the conclusion of this process, associates are to summarize their work in a concluding paper. Group supervision is maintained through clinical seminars which take place throughout the training process.
  • Independent Study Groups – the training group is divided into independent study groups. Each group chooses a subject to be self-taught throughout the year, with the aid of professionals and scholars at their disposal. At the end of the year, the group presents the fruit of their study before the general forum. After basic theoretical training is complete, associates continue their studies in independent study groups.
  • The Academic Program – the program is spread over a period of four years and includes guided seminaries covering central theoretical and clinical subjects. For the first three years, all trainees share a set core program. In addition, they are free to choose, throughout all years of training between a wide selection of offered courses and workshops, both psychoanalytic and interdisciplinary dealing with diverse issues and given by instructors from Israel and abroad.
  • Institute membership fees are 1800 Nis per year. The estimated cost of training is about 5,000 Nis per year, not including personal supervisions and analysis costs.

The Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis devotes two annual scholarships to the support of admitted associates who are having difficulties funding their training expenses.
