Training Program in Psychoanalysis
The Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis aspires to encourage high levels of knowledge and skill and to create a process of professional becoming for colleagues interested in psychoanalytic training and partnership in the establishment of the institute. We aspire to grant training of a liberal nature that will encourage in trainees, creativity and innovativeness, within standards of quality.
Activities and study in the institute are conducted on two separate tracks:
The first track is the “Forum,” which comprises the large group and deals with basic structural and procedural questions related to the Institute. This Forum meets once monthly for a number of hours. These meetings include theoretical and clinical studies, as well as organizational discussions. In the study section, members present their papers and raise core and essential psychoanalytic issues for discussion. In the organizational section, the group discusses subjects related to the activities of the institute, program development, and decisions of principle.
A second track is that of the Groups in Training. The Groups in Training function on the basis of a predetermined program, dynamically integrating study with experience. This program includes both theoretical studies and practical experience, and aspires to constitute space for openness and promulgation of original ideas, and to create a climate of maximal freedom.
The Curriculum of the Psychoanalytic Training of the Institute includes:
Personal Psychoanalysis: Each colleague accepted for training is required to undergo personal psychoanalysis, part of which has to entail as many as 4 sessions per week. A colleague who has undergone psychoanalysis that was ended not more than 8 years prior to training will not be required to undergo further analysis. Notwithstanding, it is recommended in such cases that he or she undergo further analysis/psychotherapy while conducting analyses.
Supervision: Starting from the second year, 2 different individual supervisions of two different cases are required for 2 years at least. At the end of the process, each member is required to summarize their work in an article. The group supervision is conducted in the context of clinical seminars, which are continuous for the duration of the training.
The Academic Program: The program extends over a period of a minimum of 4 years and includes guided seminars in subjects of clinical and theoretical centrality. The basic program includes: Clinical Seminars, Seminars on Theory and an Independent group study. Part of the program in the first two years is fixed for all trainees. In the third and fourth years, the theoretical learning is open to elective disciplinary and multidisciplinary seminars and workshops on a variety of subjects with teachers from Israel and abroad. These courses are open to all the Institute members.
Independent Study Groups: The training group subdivides into independent study groups. Each group chooses a subject for independent study during the year and they may receive professional assistance for this work as they deem fit. At the end of the year, members of the group are requested to present their elaborations of their subjects of study to the Forum. After completing the basic theoretical and clinical training, colleagues continue to study in independent study groups.
